What we've got here, is a failure, to communicate.

...some men you just can't reach, so you get what we had here last week.

That line is out of Guns and Roses, Civil War. It's from a movie....Cool Hand Luke, I think. It's one of those lines you just can't forget.

I think Twitter is direct competition against Blogging itself. I say my random thoughts on there, then I don't feel the need to blanket this joint with them. Which opens up the actual reason for blogging.

Why do you do it?.

  1. I have noticed a drop here too, but I still love writing here, yes there are a lot of things that come up over at twitter, but you are confined in how much you can say. Here you can have a long and loud spray, or do something silly. I think once the 'new toy' instant communication thing has worn off a lot of the confirmed bloggers will miss being able to sit down and put something together.
Either way, I'll still be blogging because I like the challenge of sitting down with absolutely no idea of what I am going to write about and see what I can come up with.

  2. I like the immediacy with Twitter. I like the social networking and the challenge of trying to say as much as you can in as few words as possible. Very Hemingwayesque, though Hemingway himself would hate Twitter and all things like it I suspect.

For me, blogging is an outlet for my writing and a fantastic way to get feedback on it.

  3. I've tried to avoid my blog as a vehicle for my truly random thoughts. I've stated before my blog is more about writing practice, I really really like getting visitors and comments there, but it's mostly a form of masturbation. Twitter has copped a flogging with my really random crap. I think it's going to get worse since i can do it from my phone and i have a good data package on it.

  5. yeah, thought the traffic might take a punch in the face. The beauty of JS was being able to do what we do at twitter, multi conversations and see whats going on, but this joint will come back.

  6. I blog mostly as an opportunity to get ideas in my head straight. Usually my mind is an ADHD style jumble of half thought ideas and trains of thought. Writing a blog post means I have to complete a thought, which can often lead me to changing my opinion about something.

Twitter is more mindless social chit chat, which I hate. Which makes it even harder to work out why I am addicted to it? Might have to do a blog post on twitter to get it all straight in my head.

  8. I haven't done Twitter. I'm into photos more than words and I tend to be more articulate with a camera than a keyboard :-)

  11. Twitter goes someway to replacing the links that the demise of Journalspace severed. There was no real coordination of resurrecting peoples blogs and so you now have all the old JS regulars on a variety of formats from WordPress to Livejournal, blogspot and beyond. Trying to assemble everyone in one place on Twitter is Birmos attempt to resurrect that community feel JS had.

Personally I feel Twitter is not ideally designed. I feel it needs better image support than twitpic and I'd like a bit more control on your feed updates but it is remarkably good as a fast, low commitment way to gather followers for JB and monitor their feed back.

But you're right its not a house.

  12. Don't know about Twitter, seems like just one more thing to cram in the day. Blogging is time consuming enough for me. Plus, who needs to know I just broke wind 2 minutes ago, etc.

Strange you should ask the why do you blog question. I just passed on an award to you in a post in which I was addressing that question, mostly for myself. Hope you accept the award. You deserve it.
