Australia's Shame...

No, not 'concentration camps' for the illegal immigrants. No, not the stolen generation. No, not Waltzing Matilda, though, that's seriously woeful....but THIS...

Lest We Forget.

  2. Pretty sure this scorecard says 'Australia won by 6 runs'

Shouldn't have had an All Black goalkicker trying to hit the winning runs. He shoulda kicked it over

  3. Dude: I was soooo completely in support of the Chappell lads on that one. Still am.

I reckon That Ball and the Packer series were two of the major pivotal points that brought Cricket into the present. Packer made it clear that the game needed to change to stay popular and make money. And the underarmer made it clear that the rules of the game had to change if it was going to be a real, professional sport.

Yep. EnnZed got the rough end of the pineapple there, and it sucks -- but Chappell the Elder was making a point to the Cricket Board far more than he was scoring a point off the Kiwis.

And in any case, it gave you lot a rallying cry that keeps you at least as happy as Anzac Day and the '83 America's Cup does Australia. What's the problem?

  4. I can't believe this is the land of Rupert Murdoch. Fair and balanced indeed.

  5. Thank you Jennifer. These Philistines have no shame.

To make a point to the cricket board....good grief. That's the best one YET. LMDBO.

  9. Winner's are grinners and losers are Kiwis.

  10. Yeah, that was a class example of winning.

  11. An underarm ball sounds like a painful medical condition to me – or possibly the result of a bungled surgical procedure.

  12. That MIGHT explain it, Simon.

  15. In all honest, the dumbest thing about the underarm: it was completely unnecessary. It was nearly a 100m hit in those days to get a six at the MCG, and McKechnie was a moderately talented all rounder but he certainly weren't no Lance Cairns. Losing the game was incredibly unlikely. Anyone with their mental faculties intact would have just told their bowler to get it in at the blockhole. I read the book Greg Chappell wrote about the 1981/82 series - the guy was within spitting distance of a nervous breakdown the whole time, not that surprising he cracked. Bit like Kim Hughes did a few yrs later when he took over as Aust captain.

  16. Exactly. All it needed was a yorker.

Actually would've been interesting to be a fly on the wall in the sheds after that.

  19. See if you can track down his book, it's an eye opener. Unders and Overs I think it was called. Came in a multi-pack (designed as a gift for grandpas - I borrowed his) with a book by Rod Marsh and one of those fucking endless cricket anecdote books. Greg's gone quite feral, hard core vegan etc.

  20. Yeah, I'll have a look around.
