Polygamy

Why's it SO morally reprehensible that it's illegal?

It's not illegal to have multiple partners, unmarried, why does it change from a golf clap amongst the peers, to 'disgusting', and a crime when the word marriage is involved?.

I might be a bit slow on it this morning cause I was up most the night on XBL. But as long as it's consensual I don't see a problem if you're into that sort of thing. One is a handful enough for me.

  1. Doesn't bother me. I was getting ready to say, look in the bible, or ask the bible folk, but they seem mixed up on the issue. At least over here in the US da bible.

  2. Also, for some reason, it seems to go hand in hand with marrying 14 year olds. can't forget Catty calling me a nazi for saying that. funny girl.

  3. Ooops. multiple partners doesn't bother me as long as 14 year olds aren't being married in the process.

  4. Yeah, different topic that one. Think that's called 'paedophilia'. But get ya point.

I believe this is an issue for many religious and non-religious alike.

  5. I don't have a problem with it. I certainly couldn't do it but if it works for other people, more power to them.

...but if you're going to be marrying each other and having children you should be able to financially support your family. Can you IMAGINE supporting like 3 wives and 12 children, for example?

  7. I think it may be tied to arguments the American Union government had with the Mormon's Brigan Young in UTAH around the civil war. I know it was a key plank in some US presidential campaigns with a pledge "to prohibit in the territories those twin relics of barbarism: polygamy and slavery." The Republicans linked the Democratic principle of popular sovereignty to the acceptance of polygamy in Utah, and turned this accusation into a formidable political weapon.

I suspect this was a basis to rally opposition to the formation of an independent Mormon state in Utah.

Not a real objection just trying to stir up a feeling of us and them by political gamesters.

  8. Thought Moko was talking about illegality in Oz. I'm Confused as to what the US civil war would have to do with it. Down under anyway.

  9. Because it's not of the norm. Marriage has always been a contract between two individuals who have made the conscious decision to spend the rest of their lives with one another.

Multiples, either unmarried or married, doesn't interest me at all. I personally feel it's an act committed by individuals who want the permission of their partner to fuck around.

If my husband or lover wanted another while still with me, he could go fuck himself. I don't want him coming to me with his dick smelling like someone else's tang.

    I find it disgusting, personally.

  10. How many polygamous relationships are truly consensual? Are there that many people out there who want to marry multiple people at once and all of them are in on it?

I think the problem with your argument is that it comes to it from one point of view not the point of view of all persons in the polygamous relationship. Generally, all the polygamy cases that have gone before the court relate to a situation where one party is living a lie with multiple partners. Not three or more people living happily in marriage to the others.

Your argument also doesn't take into account the legal ramifications of polygamy. If I marry a person who is already married and they die. Who gets the super, house we owned, life insurance? Why should the first partner suffer because the polygamist acted deceitfully. Why should the second wife/husband miss out on entitlements if that marriage is void.

Your argument seems on the surface a defensible one. Why should government intrude on the personal lives of others. But upon further reflection there are very sensible reason to ban polygamy.

  11. Yeah, I believe I said:

But as long as it's consensual

If it isn't, then I don't agree with it.

  12. I don't think it's disgusting. It sure isn't for me nor for most people I reckon but I agree with you Moko, if it's consensual then it doesn't bother me. Each to their own.
