The bullshit around the death of a 22 year old fella in the UK is doing my head in.
Part of me twitches a pang of sympathy, but that's about it. I definitely don't think he deserved it, but he definitely didn't doing anything to help himself.
There's thousands of people out there who should be queued up before people who make the same decisions he did.

I agree Moko. Sad and all but he made his bed...
ReplyDeleteIt's sad but if you were on the transplant list and he got it ahead of you and you weren't a drinker, how would you feel?
ReplyDeleteThen again how was he drinking at such an age?
There's the magic question.
ReplyDeleteI notice the 'mother' said something to the effect, 'but his friends did the same and are home now'...
ReplyDeleteThis is a shame....it definitely says something about the parenting, if he was doing this at the age of 13. But, like the article said, for every one person who gets a new liver, 20 die waiting for one. You can't waste such a gift on someone who is unlikely to change their behavior. I was horrified when Mickey Mantle, a famous professional baseball player here in the 50's and 60's....and also well-known as an enormous alcoholic.....got a new liver when he was in his 60's, and died within a few months from the damage alcohol did to the REST of his body.
ReplyDeleteMy brother in law died at 47 from liver failure. He refused to give up drinking in spite of the damage it was doing years earlier. I think 22 is way past being old enough to understand the consequences of alcohol abuse. He needed help at thirteen and momma didn't get it for him.
ReplyDeleteThanks guys.
ReplyDeleteMoko you've zero'd it nicely. the lad was drinking way too much and the parents were doing nothing about it. The fault lies with them and the lad.
ReplyDeleteSad but there you go, many more deserving cases for a rare commodity.
i'll shed nary a tear for him.
ReplyDeleteDarwinism is alive and well..and encouraging others by "hey..watch this"
Was it Gary Moore (I think that's his name) the legendary UK soccer player, who made bucketloads out of soccer, drank his way through one liver, then went and did the same to his transplanted liver before carking it, who said 'I spent all my money on booze and women. The rest I just wasted.'
ReplyDeleteSeriously though, that story was truly fucked - obviously the kid was an alky earlier than 18, which makes one wonder about Mum and Dad. But then, is he any different to the 22 year old who dies of a smack overdose? You pays your money, you takes your chances.
